There's a discussion on Skatelog just now about learning hockey stops (something I've really struggled with myself). The common consensus is that you really should have harder wheels that allow some amount of slide when learning to hockey stop - someone has suggested that the Caymen wheels that came with the R3s will work really well for this! As you improve, you can move up to grippier wheels.

Here's the discussion here:

(ps, disregard the video posted by the second contributer - that's a power slide, and something different).

I'm so tempted to try this! I used to do it all the time on ice skates when I was a kid. I fear trying it on quads may result in a face plant though!

The wheel-floor combo is really important for first learning how to do this stop. I have found that a harder wheel on a slightly slick floor allows for you to be a little less "on" for form and not face plant. Once you have the mechanics of the stop down, you can use stickier wheels to get a faster stop. There are a couple different ways to do these as well and some work bteer for others depening on your comfort on skates. Bonnie D Stoir has some great videos on youtube - she calls hers the power slide.
