Wheels with two grooves or wheels without grooves?
Discuss!

grooves don't do anything they're just a marketing trick.
also as i keep telling everyone the wheels do not maketh the skater. bronx only stopped using caymens like a month ago.

The design of the groove or tread in a wheel is supposed to give more grip for the skater. As the wheel rolls the air should be drawn through the tread which could improve traction and prevent slipping.
I imagine the point is for a skater to use a harder wheel for roll and still not slip.
I've never tried them though so whether or not their worth it is not for me to say.
It is possible that to truly feel the benefits of the wheel the skater may have to reach an impossible velocity.

As a physics teacher I can say that I agree completely with the impossible velocity thingy, Circuit. I thought the idea with "speed grooves" is less surface area in contact with the floor = less friction slowing you down = more speed.
Still vaguely bullshit, but at least it works whether your travelling at Mach 3 or "Bambi on ice" pace.

Would slim wheels not do the same though, with the addition of extra agility from less wheel?

Knock, you're a genius. Yes it would, hence why I have mega slim hockey wheels (also a different compound, much less 'squishy')

The speed grooves allow the wheel to flex which provides a mild suction with the ground when weight is applied thus providing more grip.
High speeds would need to be achieved for lighter skaters to feel the benefit. The durometer of the material would probably determine the required weight or speed needed to notice any benefit.
The removal of the material for the groove would be insignificant in terms of mass reduction of the wheels as the material removed would probably only count for a few percent of the original mass - Slim wheels would be a better option.

Interesting! I was only asking because the wheels i'm buying had a grooves version.
The wheels do not make the skater but I think they can help. For example someone my size should not be skating on soft wheels cause it's just stupid.
