Hmm... I've just read on the Suregrip website that my skates should not be used for derby!!! WTF?!? I bought them as "derby skates"... well that could explain a lot!

Does anyone own size 5 actual derby skates that I could maybe try?? I mean I assume that different skates won't all of a sudden make me A) pain free or B) amazing... but maybe it would explain the pain and never feeling like they are tight enough!

The saga continues...

if you still have those flame skates, whatever, suzy hotrod used to skate with them. the skatelog people are all just equipment nazis.

Yeah, I would say that there's nothing wrong with them for derby, especially if you've loosened your trucks/gotten softer cushions. Plus, they look BADASS.

Was it Skatelog or SureGrip's own site that said they weren't for derby??

However, skates that give you horrible foot pain aren't right for YOU. So if you've tried all of these things and you're still getting problems, you'd probably be best looking for something else. I'm actually surprised (and jealous) that most folk seem to be able to just buy a pair of skates and they're fine. I had to go through FOUR PAIRS OF SKATES until I found something that works with my gimpy deformed feet.

I love my little flamey skates... ok, new bushings, loosen trucks, double lace, foot exercises, insoles... I can do all that! Thanks ladies xxx

Bullet, thanks so much for setting up this thread, I am totally jumping on the double lacing bandwagon!

I skate with cheapy boots insoles that I use in my shoes as well cause I have collapsed arches (i.e. flat feet), so need to fix that to prevent bottom foot pain and scrapage of the inner ankle on the top of the skate. But the numbness is definitely a problem so hopefully this'll help too!

And Crotch, yes please to foot strengthening exercises!

Bullet, I also feel sometimes that my body throws in the towel when I want to skate harder so I feel your pain. I have decided that even though it pains me greatly, I'll just have to gently build up the fitness and endurance and push as hard as I can to my limits, but no be a dick and listen to my body when it tells me to stop. Better in the long run I think....

A note on insoles -- my hobbit-feet actually found proper insoles more painful than nothing at all. I ended up buying the cheapo Asda £2 cut-em-yourself cushions as a compromise and they worked pretty well as a stop-gap. They softened the soles without putting more pressure on my hobbit-arches!

There's also a sport shop in Bruntsfield that does custom insoles for £30 with something like a 60-day money-back guarantee -- I don't have the moola just now but seriously considering it...

At the end of the day, though, I think Annie's nailed it. I'm now haunting Everglides waiting for the promised size-6 Invaders to come in, because when I tried on Mayhem's I distinctly heard muffled choirs of angels singing from inside the boot!!

Bullet - you can try my invaders if you want - they are a size 4 but run big so will fit a size 5 foot.

Exactly. By all means experiment with lacing, insoles, and cushions. These things can make a HUGE difference. They made my 'Mmm, I think these are ok' skates pretty much perfect for me now.

But really, other than the initial break-in period and barring underlying medical issues, your skates should NOT kill your feet. Take it from me and my hideously deformed feet - incorrectly fitting footwear can cause all sorts of serious long-term problems. Try on as many skates as you can - there's quite an array of different types/brands/models now throughout ARRG (and they ALL fit differently). You should find something that your feet like and go AHHHhhhhh in.

Thanks Moo... I would like that!! I was looking at invaders this morning! I really want to try and make the skates I have feel more comfy because I really can't afford a new pair of skates! I've ordered new bushings this morning and with the laces/insole maybe it'll be OKAY!!

I'mm pretty glad to hear I'm not the only one in PAIN! Hee hee, does that make me a litlte sick?!? xxx

I'm sure it wont solve your issue but I found that by loosening my trucks a bit I got rid of most my back pain and a bit of foot cramp - not that I had much foot pain to start with...

however some other people get more foot pain when loosening their trucks...

I'm not sure how useful this is >.>
