WFTDA rules were updated (section 3.7 - Uniforms) http://wftda.com/rulesin short: Only Digits and Letters as Numbers - max. 4 Characters "55 mph" on the back is allowed, but the "mph" has to be significantly smaller and the player is considered "55"

Baz just forwarded me the below which clarifies this a bit better
The full changes are 3.7.4.3 A player’s number may contain up to four characters. 3.7.4.4 A player’s number must be alphanumeric with at least one numerical digit. For example: L5 is an acceptable number, but LV is not. Numbers cannot contain symbols. 3.7.4.5 A player may have small characters preceding or following her player number on her jersey e.g. 55 mph, where “mph†is considerably smaller than 55. These small characters are not considered part of the skater's number and they may not inhibit the legibility of the player’s number whatsoever. The maximum size for the small characters is two (2) inches. 3.7.4.6 Players on the same team may not have identical numbers. For example, two players may not both wear L5, but one may wear L5 and another may wear J5

well, how will we sort that then? that means that 2 evils will be 2 years behind because they'll have to go back and change everyone's numbers after the influx of emails they'll recieve. and all our t shirts are made. and we're not part of the wftda just yet. so it's ok *for now*. let us remember that all these rules are for wftda sanctioned games. we don't *have* to follow them. that sounds really stupid coming from me. that's not really what i mean. what i mean is that we don't have to go fixing everything asap until we are actually a wftda league. that's really all i meant. i understand about the numbers. totally. it just makes it hard on *every* player, and i'm sure there are hundreds, that have to change now. on the other hand, if this is something we have to fix now, how will we work it? we have new shirts, maybe, coming for leeds. we will have to get everyone, if this is what we decide, who has a :./,;' in their name to choose a new one. 24/7 just isn't the same without the slash! oh lordy...i'll add it to the spokesy agenda. sorry about the rant! not directed at any way to you justin!!! xxx

Well it really depends on the refs i guess
At the moment Refs use the WFTDA rules, even though we are not part of the WFTDA, as such all checks etc are WFTDA checks.
If your number is less than 2 inches tall (preferably 4) you can be told your not playing, so it really depends on how you wanna take it.
I know i would personally with a lot of the other leagues numbers, tell them to change them as i dont really want to try and decifer a name from someones back, when it should really be a 2 - 4 digit number.
I'll check on the - thing for you Cider, as having the degrees symbol, as long as its small is acceptable.. But i guess if you are allowed - then there is not allowed to be a number 3 on the team.

yeah, there is: psycho, cherry, daisy, armalite, skate, cider, Jo, Mad Mim, and habs. maybe daisy could change her # to 'PIE5' instead? ha ha!! cuz there's a 5 in it so it counts! anyways.... so you thing a dash is maybe ok? that would help psycho as well. xx
