Hello lovely BMC and all :gbanana:

Has the bout charity been thought about/decided yet?

I have a vague memory of maybe this being the JK Rowling charity one, BUT, if not, can I suggest:

Reclaim the Night Edinburgh?

They need money to buy banner making materials, to run workshops with *groups* about gender violence and to pay for speakers, bands and a venue at the after party.

They (errrrr ok *we*) will be having a fundraiser in early 2010 but it probably wont make enough money.

A bake sale donation would make a big difference becasue we only need about £600 in total to put on the march, so £100 from bake sale = a massive part of RTN's expenses.

Plus I could definately secure a wonderful photo opportunity, and possible website mention...

Reclaim the Night is a yearly march help in cities accross the world to draw attention to gendered violence on the streets and in the home. In Edinburgh it's on March 6th this year and ARRG should definately go on skates with out banner :gbanana:

xxxxxxxxxx

i thought we were going to think about an anti racism charity for this one?
although, with the letter going to JK, it would also be nice to say that we are doing her charity for this bout as well. thoughts?
i don't know any specific charities dedicated to fighting racism though. (bad me).
xx

Why dont' I set up a poll for either 'reclaim the night' or JK's charity? Boht would be good, although if we did JK's next bout we coudl put int he letter we've 'selected it for the next bout.... what do you think?

I could always scope out somethign antiracist for the one in August?

xx

I'm not sure if this is similar to Alma's one or not BUT

Unite Against Facism are planning counter demos to the Scottish Defence League's (bad people!) planned march in Edinburgh in March...

http://www.uaf.org.uk/

but they are like a UK-wide org not really edinburhg local, but would be quite good to donate too.

OOOH also you know how like there is "Love Music Hate Racism" and my dad was also in "Lets Kick Racism out of Football" (ha!) we could, somehow, get some kind of "Let's Booty Block Racism Out of Derby" on the go.... errr this is obviously a massive pipe dream though.

:gbanana: :gbanana: :gbanana: :gbanana: :gbanana: :gbanana:

ARRG: Statisitically the most Anti-Facist league in the UK. Stick that in your crack pipe and smoke it HATERS

This is from her site.
J K Rowling supports a wide number of charities and causes, some of which you can find more information on in this section.

She has set up the Volant Charitable Trust, which supports a wide number of causes related to social deprivation and associated problems, particularly as they affect women and children. The Trust has funded a variety of projects in the UK and abroad. It also supports research into the causes and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
www.volanttrust.com

As a postgraduate, Jo worked at the London office of Amnesty International, doing research into human rights abuses in Francophone Africa.
www.amnesty.org.uk

For seven years she was an Ambassador of One Parent Families, now called Gingerbread, a charity working with lone parents and their children. In 2007 she took an honorary position as President for the charity.
www.gingerbread.org.uk

Since 1999 J K Rowling has been a supporter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland, for nine of those years as its Patron. Having lost her mother to MS at the age of 45, this is one of the causes closest to Jo’s heart and her support has included planning and hosting fundraising events, directly lobbying politicians, writing articles and giving interviews to raise awareness of this very Scottish disease, and contributing significant funds for research in Scotland, including research establishments in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. She has recently stepped down as Patron of the charity but continues to fund MS research directly.
www.mssocietyscotland.org.uk

In 2005 J K Rowling co-founded the Children’s High Level Group (CHLG) with Baroness Emma Nicholson MEP, inspired by a press report she read about children in caged beds in institutions in the Czech Republic. This charity aims to make life better for young people in care, in Eastern Europe and ultimately all over the world. In 2007 J K Rowling auctioned for CHLG a copy of one of the seven special editions of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which raised £1.95 million. In December 2008 the book was widely published in aid of the charity and became the fastest-selling book of that year.
www.chlg.org

Jo has supported a wide range of other causes and charities, including Comic Relief, for which she has written two short books; The Maggie’s Centres for Cancer Care, of which she was a Patron for several years; the UK Labour Party, to which she donated £1 million in 2008, and Médecins Sans Frontières, in aid of which she performed in an event with Stephen King and John Irving in New York in 2006.

So I would say just pick one.

personally i don't care which charity we support, they are all equally deserving and needing of the cash so im happy with any. Alzheimers charity used to be my needy cause but god damn if i can remember which one i support now... (oh ho ho, do you see what i did there! :pow: )

My granda had alzheimers and its horrible, and as it can be hereditary it's the one i support, but we as ARRG are gonna get round making money for loads of charities over the years, so no doubt we can cover a huge number of them.

Also haha, i was like "who's Jo?" not realising that 'JK' was not infact her full first name :D
